  1. Link Exchange Programme is actually a referral program that runs online and establishes the reliability, authenticity, popularity & relevance of a particular website by virtue of its links on other websites. The Link Exchange Programme is helpful since it helps you gain votes for every link that you exchange with a website of a higher page rank (PR). PR is a dimension of Google which measures the importance of a webpage. There are a lot of important things that need to be kept in mind while exchanging links. And hence Link exchange is a separate arm of the SEO activity.

With every website that link to your website is considered as a vote to your website by the search engines. Now it depends on you whether you need good votes (by linking to highly popular websites) or bad votes (by linking to an infamous website. These votes help you in building a better image in the eyes of the search engines when they display their results. This is, therefore, an integral part of SEO.

One Way Links: Links that point only in one direction i.e. from someone else’s website to your website only.
Two way Links / Backward Links: Links that are exchanged i.e. you put a link on your website by returning the favor of your link on another website. Its Barter system.
Three way Links: When you put somebody’s link on to your website expecting your link on the exchanger and your link is put on a third website instead of the first. e.g. there are two websites A & B. Your website is C. A’s link is on your website but A does not put your link on itself but does that on B (which could be a sister concern of A).

The links are requested through webmasters of the website you wish to link to. Links are also posted on directories that can be free as well as paid.
